Ulsan Metropolitan City Develops Statistics on Youth for Future Preparation 
Publishes 'youth statistics' data for the first time as a metropolitan city
Analysis of six fields including population, housing, career awareness, employment, health, and welfare

Ulsan Metropolitan City developed and analyzed 'Ulsan City Youth Statistics,' customized statistics for local policies for the first time as a metropolitan city in order to use it as basic data for the establishment of assistance policies for the youth such as jobs for the youth.
‘Ulsan City Youth Statistics’ are government certified statistics (2017.11.29., No. 207009). Based on the resident registration population in late December, 2016, the report was constructed by integrating and analyzing scattered administrative data such as the resident registration of the youth (born in 1982-1997), property taxes, data on the recipients of the national basic livelihood security, employment insurance, and health insurance.
The youth statistics was analyzed into six fields including the youth generation's ◇population ◇housing ◇ career awareness ◇employment ◇health and ◇welfare.
According to the content of each field, the youth population of Ulsan stands at 257,050, which accounts for 21.9% of Ulsan's total population and ranks 4th among metropolitan cities, and this is 0.7% higher compared to the youth population of the entire nation (21.2%).
The inflow of youth population for the past three years is found to amount to 67,161 people and the outflow at 68,347 people, showing a net outflow of 1,186 people. Major reasons of the inflow and outflow are found to be related to jobs.
The number of youth who possess homes in Ulsan came to 23,084 people and 89.5% live in Ulsan.
The number of businesses operated by the youth stands at 14,695, and 31.4% of them are new businesses, while 19.1% of them are out of business. Major businesses are found to be ‘wholesale and retail businesses (34.6%)’, and ‘lodging and food businesses (21.5%).’
40.5% of the youth in Ulsan are currently employed, and 7.1% desire to engage in a business start-up. The most sought after careers are jobs related to the national agency and public enterprises, and the most popular business start-up field is found to be service businesses.
In addition, 59.7% of the youth in Ulsan would like to have a job or business in Ulsan, 36.5% of the youth wished for job training and the most desirable field was found to be office work.
The acquisition of youth employment insurance qualification was found to include 61,084 cases. According to the highest employment field worked by gender, males are employed in the fields of Mining and Manufacturing, while most females are working in service businesses.
According to health status, in the case of the most-treated chronic diseases, males had high blood pressure and females had diabetics. In the case of the most treated types of cancer, males had color cancer, while females had ovarian cancer.
The number of youth subscribed to the public pension system were found to be 138,625 people, and 95.8% of them joined national pension.
The number of youth recipients of Basic Livelihood Security were found to be 1,455 people, accounting for 7.7% of the total recipients in Ulsan. The number of disabled youth amounted to 3,870 people, accounting for 7.8% of the total number of the disabled in Ulsan.
Ulsan's development of statistics on the youth was developed through joint work with the Southeast Office of Statistics. By using the most recent administrative data, the burden of collecting data from survey respondents could be reduced and budgets could be saved as well.
This statistical data will be used as basic data in establishing youth support policies such as the expansion of employment opportunities and jobs in the public sector for the youth, fostering of youth human resources and capability development, the expansion of successful foundation for business start-ups and the construction of the business environment and self-support foundation, and the data will be published once every 2 years to supplementing various indices in the future.
