Ulsan announced that it was selected to receive a certificate of participation at the East Asian-Australasian Flyway Partnership’s (EAAFP*) Corporate Champion Programme Awards on Nov. 25 at 11 AM along with Hyundai Motor Company, S-OIL, Korea Petrochemical Industry Company, KyungDong City Gas and 4 additional companies from Ulsan for their efforts to protect and preserve migratory birds.
* East Asian-Australasian Flyway Partnership (EAAFP): A volunteer-based international organization selected by the 2002 World Summit on Sustainable Development. EAAFP was established in November 2006 to preserve migratory birds and their habitats throughout the East Asian-Australasian flyway routes.
The EAAFP Corporate Champion Programme will run for three years from 2022 to 2024 to protect migratory birds and their habitats in Ulsan, which was designated as the 150th global migratory city.
The focus of this program is for participating companies to designate the first species of migratory birds and protect its habitats.
Hyundai Motor Company designated the white-fronted plover, a level-two endangered species. S-OIL designated the mandarin duck, one of Korea’s national monuments. KyungDong City Gas and Korea Petrochemical Industry Company designated the black-crowned night heron and the great heron, respectively, which are part of Ulsan’s protected species.
Participating corporations created character goods depicting the corporations’ brand identities and migratory birds to easily and effectively spread awareness to the public about the mission to preserve migratory birds and their habitats.
In addition to these efforts, there are plans for flogging events and social campaigns for habitat preservation.
An Ulsan official commented, “We have plans to hold the Ulsan International Migratory Bird Symposium next year in May to create national-level dialogues and increase our presence as an internationally-designated migratory bird city.”
