The Ulsan Institute of Health & Environment (UIHE) announced that it will be implementing the ozone alert for six months, from Apr. 15 to Oct. 15.

The ozone alert is a system to minimize damage to the health of citizens and their properties caused by ozone through the issuance of an alert and report on the situation when there is high-concentration ozone.

If any of the regional measuring stations detect that the average concentration of ozone in one hour exceeds 0.12 ppm, the alert is issued for the whole region.

Last year, the ozone alert was issued 17 times on 7 days in Ulsan. It was issued 39 times on 19 days in 2018 and 25 times for 10 days in 2019, showing a decrease each year.

High-concentration ozone is produced under strong sunshine in the summer when the concentration of NOx and VOCs is high and the air is stagnant near the surface of the ground.

Ozone is a colorless gas with a pungent odor (fish odor) and strong oxidizing power. It is a secondary pollutant that is produced when air pollutants emitted from a vehicle or facility is exposed to sunshine, causing a photochemical reaction.

Being an irritant with strong oxidizing powers, it irritates the eyes and skin of humans and generates respiratory diseases. Therefore, when the ozone alert is issued, those who have poor health, including children, the elderly, and people with respiratory diseases, should be even more careful.

A UIHE researcher said, “When the ozone alert is issued, you should carefully manage your health. Ozone is a gas, not a particle material like particulate matter, which means you can’t avoid it by wearing a mask. We recommend people refrain from doing activities emitting ozone-generating materials, such as fueling, painting using organic solvent, and driving.”

If you would like to receive the ozone alert messages, apply on the UIHE website or submit an application via fax (229-5229).
