What is an Age-Friendly City (AFC)?

  • It is defined as a city embodying “active aging” —that is, a safe and healthy lifestyle for people of all ages— where people are can live freely, enjoying security, health, and socio-economic participation as they age throughout their entire lives.
  • One of the responses to the aging of the international community are age-friendly cities, which provide specific action plans through the Global Network of Age-Friendly Cities & Communities (GNAFCC).

What is the Global Network of Age-Friendly Cities & Communities (GNAFCC)?

  • The GNAFCC is a project that has been promoted since 2006 by the World Health Organization (WHO) to more effectively respond to the aging and urbanization trends worldwide, with 937 member cities from 46 countries as of 2019.
  • A specific action plan is presented to global network member countries through guidelines in 8 areas.
    (Outdoor spaces and buildings, Transportation, Housing, Social participation, Respect and social inclusion, Civic participation and employment, ommunication and information, Community support and health services)
