Ulsan Metropolitan City is a port city of the Republic of Korea, located in the southeasternmost tip of the Korean Peninsula and enjoying a natural mild climate (average annual temperature of 14.3 °C). It has a surface of 1,061.54 km² and a population of 1,098,049 (as of Dec. 31, 2024, including foreign residents). Administratively, it is divided into a total of 4 gu, 1 gun, and 55 dong regions

As of December 2017, the number of elderly people (over 65 years old) in Ulsan Metropolitan City was about 114,000 people, which amounts to 9.9% of Ulsan's total population, and the growth rate of elderly people was 2.3% p from 1997 to 2007, and 3.8% p from 2007 to 2017. By 2027, the rate of growth is expected to reach 8.9%, increasing over time and accelerating the advent of the super-aged society.
The population aged 65 and over is expected to exceed 14% of the population in 2023 (14.3%) and 20% by 2029, marking the beginning of the super-aged society.

About 15.3% of all households are elderly households, 32.0% of which are one person households; however, the ratio goes up to 47.5% for those over 80 years old.

The area with the largest number of senior citizens living alone is Nam-gu (5,701 people), followed by Jung-gu (5,323 people). For its part, Ulju-gun had the highest proportion at 19.8%, followed by Jung-gu (19.6%) and Nam-gu (18.0%).
