울산시립미술관은 미술관이 위치한 울산 원도심의 전시 공간의 정보를 모아『2022 울산 원도심 시각예술 공간 디렉토리』를 발간합니다. 울산의 원도심은 성남동을 중심으로 교동, 옥교동, 학산동을 포괄하는 지역입니다. 이 일대는 조선시대부터 울산지역의 행정과 경제의 중심지였으며,
1980년대까지 사람과 물자가 모여드는 주요 상업지구로 역할하여 왔습니다. 1990년대 삼산동, 달동을 중심으로 한 남구상권 개발이 가속화되면서
본격적인 쇠락의 길로 접어들자, 지난 2012년 도시재생사업의 일환으로 ‘문화의 거리’가 지정되었습니다. 울산시 중구의 임대료 지원사업,
공간 리모델링, 간판 설치(교체) 사업 등으로 1000m에 이르는 거리에 화랑, 공연장, 소극장, 창작 공방, 수공예점, 서예원, 필방, 전통찻집 등의
문화예술업종이 집중 육성되어 현재에 이르고 있습니다.
해당 사업이 시행된 지 10여 년이 경과 하면서 초기의 활력이 일부 소진되었고 뒤이은 COVID19의 여파는
육성 업종 상당수가 문을 닫는 결과로 이어졌습니다. 울산시립미술관은 이러한 상황에서 어느 정도 시간차를 두지만
‘원도심 활성화’란 설립 초기의 비전을 실현하고자 ‘울산 원도심 문화지도 발간’이란 첫 발걸음을 내딛습니다.
다양한 문화예술업종 가운데 시각예술 전시 공간의 정보를 현행화하여 본 디렉토리와 문화지도를 발간 배포하며,
각 공간이 품은 다채로운 이야기를 비디오 에세이 #미술관 옆 #MuseumHood로 소셜미디어를 통해 연재합니다.
콘텐츠의 고도화를 위해 올해의 대상 기관은 시각예술 전시 공간으로 한정하였지만 정기적으로 프로젝트를 추진하며
그 범주 역시 다각화할 예정입니다. 또한 해당 기관과의 적극적인 대화의 시간을 마련하여
원도심 활성화를 위한 울산시립미술관의 역할을 지속적으로 갱신하고자 합니다. 본 디렉토리 및 유관 콘텐츠가
앞으로의 울산 원도심 재활성화에 유용하게 활용되기를 기대합니다.
Ulsan Art Museum publishes the 2022 Ulsan Old Town Visual Art Space Directory with information on exhibition spaces
in the old town of Ulsan, where Ulsan Art Museum is located. The old town of Ulsan is an area centered on Seong-nam-dong including Gyo-dong, Okgyo-dong, and Haksan-dong.
This area was the center of the Ulsan area’s administration and economy since the Joseon era,
and it served as a major commercial district attracting people and goods through the 1980s. When it entered the path of full decline
as development accelerated for the Nam-gu commercial zone, centered on Samsan-dong and Dal-dong, in the 1990s,
the Culture Street was designated as a part of an urban regeneration program in 2012. Arts and culture businesses
including the gallery, performance hall, small theater, art studio, craft shop, calligraphy center, calligraphy supply store,
and traditional tea house, have been intensively nurtured along a 1,000-meter stretch of street
through the Ulsan Jung-gu District’s rent support, space remodeling, and sign installation (and re-installation) programs.
As over a decade passed since this project was first implemented, the early vitality was partially worn
and the ensuing COVID-19 winter led to a number of the promoted businesses closing.
Under such circumstances and despite the interval, Ulsan Art Museum takes the initiative of publishing
an Ulsan Old Town Culture Map to realize its early founding vision of invigorating the original urban center.
Taking up-to-date information on visual art exhibition spaces, among the various arts and culture establishments,
we distribute this directory and culture map, while also publishing each space’s colorful stories
in a series of video essays titled ‘MuseumHood’ on social media.
Although we limited this year’s subject to visual art exhibition spaces for content advancement,
we plan to implement this project annually while also diversifying the range.
Additionally, we seek to renew Ulsan Art Museum’s role in invigorating the original urban center
by preparing a time for constructive conversations with applicable institutions.
We look forward to this directory and related contents being used as a meaningful database
for revitalizing Ulsan’s original urban center in the future.
