Since the term "artificial intelligence" was coined in the mid-1950s, we have now reached a turning point in the AI era. This turning point does not signify just a technological shift but indicates that AI has become an everyday tool in our lives.

Can AI become an artist? Is it a kind assistant or an excellent tool for artists?

By posing questions about artificial intelligence, we are, perhaps paradoxically, led to reflect on the very 'conditions' and 'uniqueness' of artistic creation. The Ulsan Art Museum's special exhibition, <Art and Artificial Intelligence>, aims to engage with these inquiries, examining the essence of artistic creation at the end of the AI era.

The exhibition is divided into four sections. First, we look at the journey from Nam June Paik’s use of technology in media art to the present-day convergence of AI and art, presented through video. Next, we showcase works by artists who have expanded their creative realms using AI and pioneered new artistic methods. Then, we examine artworks that address the new socio-ethical issues and contradictions related to AI technologies. Finally, the exhibition presents the theme of “floating art,” exploring how artistic creation hovers above and immerses itself in the technology that underpins it.

Art has perhaps always served as a joyful “laboratory” and “playground” for new technologies. Through this exhibition, we hope to explore the interaction and co-evolution of art and cutting-edge technologies, providing a moment of reflection on the true meaning of artistic creation.
