A child with sparkling eyes appears as the protagonist in Jung Mikyung’s (b. 1983, Ulsan) pictures. The child, whom the artist named “Mimi,” forms unity with surrounding entities while moving between the boundaries of space and time. As a part of a mountain ridge with clouds hanging around the waist, as an astronaut, and as a tiger.... The creation of a character(s) repeatedly appearing in an artist’s works, and possessing a presence like an animation protagonist, is a common characteristic of ‘neo-pop’ artists, who have emerged since the 1990s. Jung Mikyung’s works stand at an antipode with such general traits of neo-pop in several respects. In her works, black-and-white sketches and negative space replace the flashy colors and full compositions typical of neo-pop artists. Also, her speech, inspiring warm thoughts regarding forgotten subjects, is headed somewhere fundamentally different from existing neo-pop including cynical ironies regarding reality.
