Kwon Hayoun(1981-) recreates her art by adding her imagination to historical events or personal experiences. Inspired by A Day in the Life of Kubo the Novelist, a novel by Pak Taewon that is set in Seoul in 1934, Kubo Walks the City adopts manmoon manhwa (cartoons in which pictures are accompanied by long passages) from 1920-1930s newspapers. Kwon directly paints black-and-white pictures into a virtual space and creates a drawing video that resembles a succession of scenes from manmoon manhwa. Much as Kubo wandered the city in the novel, viewers can personally experience a painted version of Gyeongseong (present day Seoul) in the 1920s using a VR headset. The gramophone, when approached, emits sound, and the train, when boarded, feels as if it is actually moving. Much as manmoon manhwa were destroyed or deleted as a result of Japanese censorship in 1924, the blackened spots in the video are censored. Through this virtual reality recreation, viewers can experience the zeitgeist of the era from the perspective of an observer, and they can at the same time experience Kubo’s story and present-day Korean society.
