Seo Hyun-suk (1965-) uses media and technology as his primary means of expression, and he creates artwork that raises the question of the “location of an agent that is dispersed across reality and the virtual world” through a process of an intermixing of physical locations and virtual environments. ( ) is an immersive VR work that is personally experienced by wearing goggles. The work brings viewers to the interior of a building that exists in a cosmic space unaffected by gravity. Like a dream space unaffected by the physical laws that define reality, this unfamiliar and bizarre virtual space contracts and expands by means of self-replication, thus creating a fracture in the viewers perceptions and awareness. The appearance of another entity that looks in on the self through a window creates a sense of unease, leading to a moment of doubt in the sensory systems of the viewer. The experience of a Heterotopian space that exists both inside and without raises the question of how our consciousness encounters and interacts with the world outside that consciousness. It questions the individual consciousness, which is believed to be unique and special, and belief in the senses.
