Ulsan creates city for the safety and happiness of women

On Mar. 8, the Ulsan Metropolitan Government announced that it would expand the scope of policies for women to create a “city for the safety and happiness of women” in celebration of the 116th International Women’s Day.

The city is unveiling various policies, such as gender equality projects that citizens can empathize with, preventing violence against women, and operating victim protection facilities and counseling centers to enhance and aid women’s rights.

Ulsan’s government also supports women’s economic independence and enhancement of their social status by running the city’s Women Resources Development Center, Women’s Community Center, and New Work Support Center (four branches).

The expanded scope of policies for women includes the following:

The city of Ulsan, utilizing the gender equality fund, will select and implement gender equality projects that citizens can feel and empathize with starting at the end of January. The city also realizes gender equality that reflects the changing times by holding diverse events to emphasize and raise awareness of the importance of fair treatment of all genders, celebrating gender equality week in September.

The Women Resources Development Center, Women’s Community Center, and New Work Support Center will promote women’s social participation and operate 417 courses, including education for women’s employment and business foundations, their self-development, and growth of their career capabilities to increase women’s jobs with certified quality and quantity.

Furthermore, the city government will continuously enforce its one-stop support for female victims of violence through facilities such as the integrated counseling center and Sunflower Center and reinforce response measures via means such as victim support expansion and addressing blind spots.

In particular, the Ulsan Center for Women’s Hotline 1366, selected as the operating institute for the “2024 Five Major Metropolitan-level Integrated Support Projects for Victims of Violence,” plans to extend aid by gaining expertise on responses to high-difficulty incidents, such as complex damage, and through cooperation between relevant organizations from early emergency care to recovery in daily life.

The city will newly implement an emergency housing support project, which provides temporary accommodations, such as single-room houses and studios, to empower specialized relief for stalking victims. The “Support Center for Children and Teenage Victims of Sexual Exploitation” will also offer integrated support services, including emergency relief, legal aid, and educational benefits for children and teenagers who are victims of grooming and sexual violence, as well as minors who suffered sex trafficking.

A city official said, “In celebration of International Women’s Day, we will do our best to make Ulsan a city where women are safe from various forms of violence and promote their active participation in society.”
