Ulsan was elevated to a city when it was designated as a specific industrial zone in 1962 and became a metropolitan city in 1997. As Korea’s largest industrial cluster for automotive, shipbuilding, maritime and petrochemical industries, Ulsan records annual exports of approximately USD 100 billion.
Located in the center of East Asia and at the southeastern end of the Korean Peninsula, Ulsan Metropolitan City is a seaport town blessed with a warm and mild climate.
The population of Ulsan is 1,120,000 (Korea's 7th largest city) and the area of Ulsan is 1,062 km2 (1.7 times larger than Seoul).
The Taehwagang River, which just 20 years ago used to be called "the river of death", has been transformed into a first-class clean river as a result of water quality improvement and environmental restoration, and has now become a sanctuary that welcomes the return of salmon and migratory birds, inhabited by some 100 species of plants and animals.
In addition, Ulsan is becoming an environmentally-friendly eco-city where humans and nature co-exist, by constructing eco-parks in downtown, such as The Taehwagang National Garden, Baengnidae Forest, and Ulsan Grand Park.
Ulsan has been a gateway of international seaborne trade since the Silla Dynasty period. It is also a historic city where valuable historical assets like the Petroglyphs of Bangudae Terrace and Petroglyphs of Cheonjeon-ri, world-renowned prehistoric heritage, are located.
In addition, Ulsan offers a number of attractive tourist sites including Ganjeolgot along the East Coast where the sun first rises in Korea, Yeongnam Alps with its magnificent scenery, Jangsaengpo Whale Village, an advance base for whaling, and Jangsaengpo Whale Museum as well as Ulsandaegyo Bridge, of which the distance between towers is the third longest in the world.
Now, Ulsan is preparing to further advance itself from an industrial city to a "global energy hub city."
Ulsan is jump-starting as a global energy hub by fostering renewable energy industries, through initiatives such as the construction of a hydrogen economy ecosystem, the Northeast Oil & Gas Hub, and the offshore wind power industry, and it is making its best effort to develop new growth engine that will lead the development of Ulsan by fostering the future automobile industry as well as the competitiveness of the nuclear power plant decommissioning industry.
