The Taehwagang river, which has 1st grade water quality, and The Taehwagang National Garden, with its Bamboo Forest, have been selected as one of the 20 major eco tourist sites in Korea, the first time for a park in downtown. In addition, after Simni Bamboo Grove was selected as one of Korea's Top 100 Tourist Attractions by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, it has now become the best ecological tourist site and is being developed as an ecotourism resource by expanding it into the larger Baengni Bamboo Grove.
Taehwagang, which used to be called 'the river of death' just 20 years ago, has now become a habitat for some 700 species of animals and plants such as native fish species (salmon, sweetfish), white herons, otters, and raccoons.
The Taehwagang National Garden(Samho District), which in summer becomes the home of white heron and hosts rooks (Corvus frugilegus) in winter, is the largest migratory bird santuary in Korea. Here, visitors can enjoy the splendid group dances of white herons (some 8,000 birds) and rooks (some 50,000 birds).
