Swedish Parliamentary Committee on Industry and Trade to visit Ulsan Visit by 15 members including the Committee's Speaker and Swedish ambassador to Korea Visiting major industries such as Hyundai Heavy Industries and Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power Members of the Swedish Parliamentary Committee for Industry and Trade are visiting Ulsan. Ulsan Metropolitan City announced that 10 members of the Swedish Parliamentary Committee on Industry and Trade (Speaker: Tobias Andersson) and the Swedish Ambassador to the Republic of Korea (Daniel Wolvén) will visit Ulsan on Wednesday, August 30 at 10 AM to meet with Mayor Kim Doo-gyum. After meeting with the mayor, the delegation will visit major industrial facilities in Ulsan, including HD Hyundai Heavy Industries and Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power. The visit was organized to see HD Hyundai Heavy Industries, which has the world's largest gantry crane imported from Sweden (Malmö) in 2002, and to inspect the Ulsan and Busan areas, where seven nuclear power plants (NPPs) are in operation, in support of the Swedish government's policy to expand investment in NPPs. The Swedish government has revised its energy policy goal from implementation of 100% renewable energy, which has been promoted by the government since 1980, to “implementation of 100% fossil-free energy.” In particular, it plans to revise the law to expand investment in NPPs and to build a wind farm on the southern coast that can supply electricity to 500,000 households. The visit of the Swedish lawmakers is expected to serve as a good reference for Ulsan's NPP and offshore wind power projects. It is also an opportunity for Mayor Kim to promote his vision of developing Ulsan as an energy hub city internationally. “Ulsan is striving to promote the energy industry as a new flagship industry,” said Mayor Kim. “I hope that Ulsan and Sweden will work together as close partners in the energy industry in the future.” In addition to the Swedish parliamentary delegation, Ulsan has also hosted the president of the Kazakhstan Investment Corporation, the Chilean energy minister, a delegation from the U.S. (city of Fullerton), and ambassadors from the EU to Korea. In October, delegations from 79 member organizations of the Association of North East Asia Regional Governments (NEAR) will visit Ulsan for the NEAR General Assembly. |
