Ulsan completes Toxic Chemicals Disaster Control System

Final briefing session held for the “Onsan National Industry Complex’s Smart Integrated Control System” project

At 3 PM on Mar. 21, the Ulsan Metropolitan Government announced that it held a final briefing session for the “Onsan National Industry Complex’s Smart Integrated Control System” at the Disaster Countermeasures Headquarters situation room in Ulsan City Government Building Annex II, participated in by around ten members, including public servants and officials from the Ulsan Chemical Disaster Joint Prevention Center and service businesses.

This project was implemented by securing KRW 300 million from being selected for the “Regional Community Disaster Prevention and Damage Reduction Project” hosted by the Ministry of the Interior and Safety in 2022.

Major project details include the installation of 13 complex toxic chemical detection sensors within the petrochemical complex and its premises within the Onsan National Industry Complex and enhancing the integrated control system, including the diffusion prediction program.

With the completion of Ulsan Mipo National Industry Complex’s smart integrated control system in 2022 and the finalization of this project, Ulsan has become capable of monitoring toxic chemical levels in real time for its two national industry complexes and utilizing the Korea Meteorological Administration’s data to predict the diffusion range of toxic chemicals and other matters upon detecting levels that go beyond normal.

In particular, the project will establish an emergency resident evacuation order and disaster situation notice system, which will contribute to the safety of around 400,000 people living in all of Nam-gu and some parts of Dong-gu, Buk-gu and Ulju-gun.

A city official said, “We will keep utilizing our Ulsan-tailored disaster management system to react rapidly to disaster occurrences and protect the lives and wealth of Ulsan citizens, contributing to bringing safety to Ulsan.”

Meanwhile, the city’s smart integrated control system project was recognized for its 94% precision in toxic chemical diffusion prediction by a certifying institute. Also, in the “2022 Contest for Local Governments with Excellent Performance in Fulfilling National Goals” hosted by the Ministry of the Interior and Safety, Ulsan won the encouragement award for the contribution to building a digital disaster management system by utilizing data and an ICT-based daily safety monitoring system.
