Ulsan Becomes Korea's First to Implement Electrification of Two-Wheeled Vehicles in Industrial Complexes The Ministry of Environment teams up with HD Hyundai Heavy Industries, LG Energy Solution, and Cycloid Plans to support swift electrification of two-wheeled vehicles, including expansion of battery exchange-type recharging facilities On June 3, at 3 PM, the Ulsan Metropolitan Government signed an MOU on Electrification of Two-Wheeled Vehicles in Industrial Complexes and announced the fully-fledged implementation of the project at the HD Hyundai Heavy Industries' media room. The Ministry of Environment, HD Hyundai Heavy Industries, LG Energy Solution, and Cycloid joined the agreement. The project's core is providing battery exchange-type recharging facilities to resolve the issues of short traveling distances and long recharging hours that hinder the supply of electric two-wheeled vehicles. The spread of battery exchange-type recharging facilities will allow workers to conveniently replace discharged batteries with new ones, eliminating the waiting time for recharging and diversifying payment plans to cater to various environments. Another advantage of this project is that it enables the purchase of electric two-wheeled vehicles without batteries, which offer low initial costs. Following the MOU, the Ulsan Metropolitan Government set out to secure subsidies and battery exchange-type recharging facilities for the swift electrification of two-wheeled vehicles. The metropolitan government will also deliver administrative support, such as offering additional subsidies for purchasing electric two-wheeled vehicles after discarding the ones with internal combustion engines. The Ministry of Environment also provides subsidies for purchasing electric two-wheeled vehicles and policy-wise and financial support to expand battery exchange-type recharging facilities for those vehicle types. Meanwhile, HD Hyundai Heavy Industries will replace its 33 deteriorated two-wheeled vehicles with internal combustion engines in use with their electric counterparts and install two battery exchange-type recharging units to create an atmosphere where employees are facilitated to buy electric two-wheeled vehicles after deciding to disuse their old rides with internal combustion engines. KooRoo, the independent company within LG Energy Solution that manufactures battery exchange-type rechargers, will install two units inside HD's business site. Also, the company will additionally install ten units around Ulsan's industrial complex area, with a focus on the Dong-gu region, to expedite the electrification of two-wheeled vehicles. Cycloid will provide a mobile online platform to promote and deliver convenience for purchasing electric two-wheeled vehicles and perform compensated sales of deteriorated combustion engine vehicles. Other parties include KR Motors, an electric two-wheeled vehicle manufacturer, which will execute discounted offers through special sale events. An official from the Ulsan Metropolitan Government commented, This project expects to increase electric two-wheeled vehicle riders in Dong-gu, the region with the highest number of two-wheeled vehicles, which will improve air quality and living environments and reduce greenhouse gas emissions, adding, We also anticipate this project to spread to other companies and rapidly propagate the supply of electric two-wheeled vehicles. Meanwhile, Ulsan has 65,270 two-wheeled vehicles as of April 2024, 36,945 of which are registered to Dong-gu and Buk-gu alone, accounting for 56% of the total. |
